Hello all you glorious podficcers! This is the first check in for Podfic Big Bang and Epic Podfic Big Bang.

How is everyone doing? Have you found a title (or titles) that you wish to record? If not, do you want help finding something? If you do, what is it? (or is it a surprise???)

Have you started recording and editing yet? How are you finding it? What do you think will be the biggest challenge with the project you've picked?

I'm doing okay. Not as far as I had hoped but I've been distracted by other (mostly non-podfic) projects. I'm doing the "The Sum of Its Parts" series (I linked it in the sign up post). I've got the first 2 chapters recorded and edited. There's some gorgeous cover art for it up on AO3 so I've asked the artist whether I can modify it for podfic cover art (I've worked with this artist in the past so I'm hopeful). I've also told myself that if I can get the first 2 fics in this series podficced in time, I'll allow myself to do something for PBB (non-epic version). Though honestly I don't know how much I'll be able to get done as that I got a new job which requires me to work 40hrs a week and also probs edit way less at work so that'll be interesting to work around. I'm hopeful though!

Congrats on the job! It sucks that you have less podficcing time, but yay dollars?

Also, you've got these 1.2 million words in the bag! I'm forever motivated - and appalled - by you saying, "62000 words? I can do that in two days."

alrighty! so far, i have 2 entries for the big bang, strandline by typh, which is 40k and perhaps the most difficult thing i've ever read bc it's so very high fantasy. Still, the best last herald-mage fic i've ever read. I've recorded 3 out of 9 chapters of it, haven't edited any but WHATEVER. and the second is house proud by astolat, harry potter, h/d and astolat has blankie permission so i didnt have to go ask, fuck YES. that one is half way done, and only 20something k, so that should be easy peasy

my epic project is a curious carriage of crystal and cold by etharei, who ALSO has blanket permission *happy dance* that on's 114k and I've recorded 2 out of 16 chapters, neither of which have been edited bc i am actually a potato

Yay for blanket permission! Don't feel bad about not editing right away--I often wait until I'm done recording before touching any editing too. You are not alone!

Hmmm, probably not that helpful! The gist is, we have one project pretty much done and the rest are in progress. I'm sure I'm missing a load of stuff, but we're making great progress on our silly to-do list. I have two solo projects that I'm planning on doing, so we'll see how that turns out!

I get confused about the differences. Could you go over the rules again?

Podfic Big Bang: 10,000 word requirement, due in August
Epic Podfic Big Bang: 75,000 word requirement, due in December

The only differences are really the minimum word count and the timeline.

I'm still recording Provenance by

drinkbloodlikewine and

whiskeyandspite and it's giving me problems. It's a very character-driven story, where I'm used to recording stories that are more fast paced and plot-driven. As a result, I only have 1/15 chapters recorded and edited.

I had planned on recording the longest chapters first, but whenever I sit down to record, I get restless around the 20-minute mark. I'm considering productivity sprints with a friend or using the Pomodoro method (25 mins recording, with a 5 minute break) on my own.

Me too! Recording out of order isn't working for me, so I'm going back to the beginning. We'll see how it works out tonight.

I've run into trouble recording for longer than 20-30 minutes at a time too. It took me a while to realize that it's okay not to read straight through to the end of a long chapter. The pause at the end of a scene makes a really good stopping point too.

Pomodoro is something that I only recently discovered. It sounds promising!

Thank you! I thought I was a bad podficcer because I don't have the endurance to record for 45 mins or more.

Pomodoro has worked pretty well in my professional life, so I'm hopeful that it'll be good for recording too.

I think I've found a title but I want to re-read to see if I still like it enough to spend a lot of time with it. The author has blanket permission if I do, yay. And I've got a couple of other things lined up if necessary. This will be the first time I've recorded anything that will require more than one recording session, so I want to work on my recording space to make it as easy to replicate as possible. I want to start recording by 17 May at the latest.

you seem to have everything in hand! (tip about recording in multiple sessions (feel free to ignore!!): if your sessions are longer than 45-60min then if your sound switches a touch between recording sessions it won't matter as much. The listener will notice but will get used to it pretty quickly.)

Sounds like you have a plan! Re-reading is a worthwhile part of the workflow. I find that if I re-read before recording, I have fewer flubs in my reading. :-)

ahhh music. I was stuck on opening/chapter intro music for my project too. Do you have some ideas? and you seem to be trucking along with recording.

You're more than 10% done recording, so that's definitely worthy of applause! Music is always the hardest part. I bet if you put the word out for what sort of sounds/themes you're looking for someone might have a few helpful suggestions. :-)

I'm doing the Epic Podfic Big Bang with the Psychic AU by Laughsalot3412, a Leverage OT3 fic that's just spilling over with feels.

I've recorded the first chapter of the first fic, out of five, and done most of the editing, but there are still a couple of blips I may need to record back over. I feel really good about settling into the character voices, though.

Leverage podfic is my comfort podfic. I have several Leverage OT3 podfics downloaded that I listen to when I'm unwinding in a bath or something. (Though this fic is too angsty to be a comfort podfic. The feels are coming.)

I'm recording Meet Me Halfway to Your Heart, a 23k Carmilla fic. It's chock-full of the Fake Married trope, which is basically my kryptonite.

And I've actually already finished recording and editing...??? It took about three weeks, which is a ridiculously fast pace for me, and I'm still kind of in shock.

So now I'm planning on recording the sequel as well, which is also about 23k. If I keep this pace up (or even if I slow down), I shouldn't have any problems.

Okay so, change of plans. I was re-reading through the sequel, and I remembered that it's very good, but I don't love it as much as I love the first fic. I could record it, but I think it would end up being a little bit of a slog and less of a fun project (and the story is already complete without the sequel, so I don't feel compelled on that end).

So instead I decided to turn my eye to the Epic PBB and the 85k-ish series that I've been wanting to record for a while. Problem: no blanket permission. Which is fine, I actually end up asking for permission for stories a lot. But problem #2: I just saw in the comments that someone else already asked to podfic the story back in February (they were told yes, btw). And I mean, I am totally in favor of re-pods, but this person hasn't finished their version yet. Actually I think they might not have even started it, because they mentioned in their comment that they were going to start it after finishing something else and they have a WIP podfic going on. And I would just kind of feel like I was swooping in on something that someone else was already planning. Bahhhhh. I don't even have a backup story in mind (I don't actually read many things that are very long). Anybody have opinions? Would it be okay to podfic this story or should I look for something else?

good for you being able to step away from a project you know you won't have fun doing (something I have a problem doing)! You could always ask the other podficcer about their plans for the fic you want to podfic? Sometimes people are super stoked that someone else wants to podfic the thing that they were struggling with/not getting around to. OR maybe they want to simultaneous release it which is always fun!!

Thanks for the advice! It was a good call. I messaged the other podficcer and they encouraged me to go ahead and podfic the thing. So I guess I'm going to go ahead and declare that I'll be recording the Mad Max Fury Road fic Blood, Coffee, & Motor Oil, as well as its sequel. This is double the length of the longest thing I've ever recorded before (*meep*), so wish me luck!

Late check-in is late, but... I'm working on several podfics at the same time right now, so I haven't entirely decided which one is gonna be my Big Bang one yet. The one I'm recording for Epic Big Bang is coming along nicely, though (at least recording-wise... editing is a pain in the ass :))).
